  • Lucy V. Salek Chairperson

    Lucy V. Salek

    A lifelong resident of Lewisham and neighbouring areas, Lucy Salek joined AFRIL’s board as Chair in January 2017 and will be responsible for steering AFRIL into the new strategic period and the continuing development of its Governance arrangements. 

    Alongside her position as Chair of AFRIL, Lucy Salek is the Senior Advisor on Conflict & Fragile States for the international NGO Islamic Relief Worldwide, an organisation with over 30 years of experience supporting vulnerable forced migrants in more than 30 countries. 

    She holds an MA in African Studies (Political Science) from Yale University and has worked across Asia, the Middle East, Eastern Europe and Sub-Saharan Africa.

  • John Paul Axon Treasurer

    John is a qualified accountant (CIMA) who works in the charity sector.

    To date he has worked at 12 charities and has excellent knowledge and experience of financial accounting and reporting in the charity sector.

    He works with a finance volunteer and the independent examiner to produce AFRIL's annual accounts for inclusion in the annual report. He also provides advice and guidance on financial matters affecting the charity.

    He has lived in the Lewisham area for 12 years.

  • Zaid Moosa Secretary

    Zaid Moosa


    Zaid started volunteering at AFRIL in March 2014, working initially as Rainbow Club Administrator. His role has since then expanded to include Fundraising, Database Management and IT Systems, joining the AFRIL Board in November 2015 as Secretary.

    He holds a degree in BA Arabic and Linguistics from the School of Oriental and African Studies and has previously worked in a range of different jobs, including as a professor at university in Colombia and as a Satellite Coordinator at the arabic news channel, Al Ghad Al Arabiy. In his current role he works for the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts as a Fundraising Manager, focusing on Individual Giving.








  • Rebecca (Becci) Pearson

    Rebecca (Becci) Pearson

    Becci has a background in Human Resources and has over ten years experience of working within HR in the Higher Education sector, most recently at Goldsmiths, University of London. 

    Becci has lived in the borough of Lewisham for many years, and has three young children. She joined AFRIL as a Trustee in May 2016 and, alongside Hilary Judge, helps facilitate the HR Committee and to deliver various HR related tasks for AFRIL.

  • Julie Rey

    Julie Rey

    Julie was a volunteer at Afril's Rainbow Club Saturday creche, then reception class for 2 years before joining the Board of Trustees in 2012.

    In her day job she is a Conference Director at Informa Telecoms & Media, producing international B2B conference for the telecoms, media & ICT sector in Africa.

    Julie is French and has lived in Lewisham Borough for 15 years. She is married with two children.

  • Gimhani Eryagolla

    Gimhani Eryagolla

    Gimhani is currently a trainee solicitor specialising in actions against the police, immigration detention and prison law.  She has an LLM in public law and human rights.  She has spent the last four years working in the legal aid sector, working with people from migrant backgrounds, and has some experience working in an NGO.

  • Jessica Javaherian

    Jessica Javaherian

    Jess is a practising Solicitor-Advocate who works in-house for the largest education charity in the UK.

    Alongside this role, Jess has experience working on human rights matters, most recently spending time in Ghana, West Africa, working with charities to educate and empower communities. She is a pro-bono member of the Law Society's International Human Rights Action Team, and a volunteer for the Red Cross within their Refugee Support Services.

    She has lived in the Borough of Lewisham for 3 years.

  • Hilary Judge

    Hilary Judge

    Hilary joined AFRIL as a Trustee in April 2016.  She has extensive experience of HR, having worked in the Further Education, Housing and Charity sectors for many years.  Hilary welcomes the opportunity to use her experience to support the success of AFRIL.

    Hilary has lived in Lewisham for 30 years and her two adult children who attended local schools so is also pleased to be working with a Lewisham based charity.
